A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Musician George Williams, Co. B, 123rd Ohio Vols., New Creek, Va., Feb. 8, 1864, in part: "…we were called away from Martinsburg last Monday night at 12 o'clock. Traveled all night reached Cumberland at sun rise…took the trains again for this place. We are now about 150 miles from Martinsburg without any tents but these little dog tents. They ain't much better than none. We left all we had but a blanket and overcoat. Old General Kelly got scared…about 150 Rebs and set the whole force on the R. R. in motion but it did no good. The Rebs got all they could carry away and left. We expect to go back…to Martinsburg in a few days as soon as they get over their scare. The weather has been very cold ever since we left. Companies A. D. F. E. are up on the R. R…what is left of the Regt are here in the fort. We have two officers here Major [Kellog] and Lieut. Johnson…we were to have been payed off two months ago but our drunken officers did not make out the pay rolls right…we are all out of money…Cordelia was going home last Tuesday but the Rebs burnt some bridges on the RR and stopped the cars from running…". Also included is the original transmittal cover signed by Major [Horace] Kellogg [WIA Winchester, Va., 6/15/63]. VG
