A war-date Union regimental manuscript document, 4pp. folio, entitled: "List of Deserters from 2nd Mass. Infty. during [the] week ending August 13, 1864." Amazingly, this list numbers nearly 40 men who deserted from the 2nd Mass. Vols. in just one week during the Atlanta campaign. The list of deserters contains some very colorful description aids to be used in identifying these men and reads, in small part: "Co. A: Private William Thompson, about 23…florid complexion, rather a good looking fellow and better dressed than the average of recruits. Co. B: Private Henry Miller, born Germany…has his discharge from the 1st N. J. Infty…Co. E: Arthur A. Robin deserted August 13th 1864: 5 feet 6 inches in height, dark complexion, dark hair, had on butternut trousers and a dark straw hat, calls himself an Englishman…Patrick Crouin & John Sullivan-Irsihmen…Crouin has rather an idiotic and repulsive countenance, with dark hair & dark eyes…Crouin & Sullivan are supposed to be chums…". Others include: "…very sickly complexion…a white spot on the ball of his eye…freckled & very muddy complexion…very brutal, low forbidding expressions…black chin whiskers & moustache-imperial when not shaved…has a habit of sticking his tongue out when engaged in any exertion…face somewhat sallow, has a yankee look…". Much more. Minor soiling, else VG
