A good war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by 1st Lt. John T. Andrews, Co. D, 179th New York Vols, "Camp of 179th N. Y. Vols., near Hancock Station, Va., March 21, 1865", in part: "In an hour I start out on picket…a strong line of works is being thrown up in our rear extending from Fort Davis to City Point, and it is rumored that all the lines to our left is to be given up and we fall back within this new line…of late there has been a great deal of shelling by the forts in our vicinity…every evening the display of fireworks is magnificently grand…we received orders to turn in our surplus baggage…thursday we were under arms awaiting an attack from the rebels as they were moving troops in our front. I was on picket Wednesday and I could see that troops had been moved in our front and there appears to be a general preparation for the opening of the campaign…I am on duty every third day…". Also included is the letter's original transmittal cover, Fine.
