A nice war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by 1st Lt. John T. Andrews, Co. D, 179th New York Vols, "Camp of 179th N. Y. Vols., "near Alexandria, Virginia, May 6, 1865", in part: "…you should have seen the army while it lay in front of Petersburg and Richmond…our Brigade was reviewed today. It presented a fine appearance…most of the men having new clothes---and the officers also…we have drilled nearly everyday…the men are anxious to go North. Before the capture of Petersburg and Richmond and the surrender of Lee the men were contented. They dreaded battles, but they were here to do…the work is done , and all want to go home. Hardly any one is contented to 'play soldier'…". Also included is the letter's original transmittal cover, near Fine. 200-300
