A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Edgar B. Bennet, 1st Conn. Hvy. Artillery, "Before Petersburg, Va., Nov. 13, 1864", in part: "…last night things froze quite hard and we had to keep fire all night or else freeze… I don't know what we will do this winter for wood is…scarce…since our old Capt. left us we have not had to fire but once since last summer…the pickets remain quiet in order to keep near their fires. The army is in active operations…Sherman has burnt Atlanta and is now on his way to Charleston, S. C. If he goes there there will be more fighting here before long in order to keep Lee from sending any of his forces down there. I am sorry to see how the election has gone but I cannot help it…". Also included are several small swatches of the 1st Connecticut's regimental flag which was broken up after they war. Overall VG.
