A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William Webb [POW Weldon Railroad, Va., 8/19/64 & DOD 10/29/64 Salisbury Prison, N. C.], Co. C, 94th New York Vols., "Camp on Picket, near Petersburg, Va., Aug. 11, [1864], addressed to former 94th New York comrade Lyman James Plummer (1843-1923) of Ellisburgh, Jefferson County, New York, in part: "…at present [I am] tuff as a bare and as black as a niger…we are on picket…we are very close to the rebs but they don't shoot at one another. We made a bargain not to…we can walk were we [want]…it is a good deal than to be shooting all the time…we have been under fire all summer and…everything looks like gifting back to the rear…I shall be glad when that time comes for I had got sick of this show and I don't want to see any more of it…if the Rebs don't shoot me, my time will be out in October and then they won't get me agane for all the money that thay have got in the United States…James I want you to write and tell me how you git along and…how the girls are and if you can git any fun out of them. I should think that you could for thar aren't meny boys thar and there aren't a grate many left hear for Old Grant has killed them off this summer…of our Old company we have got six of us left and we have got 31 men left in our company…we cant tell how many will get through this summer…".
