A good pair of war-date Union soldier's letters, totaling 8pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Cyril Lum, Co. H, 185th New York Vols., addressed to former 94th New York comrade Lyman James Plummer (1843-1923) of Ellisburgh, Jefferson County, New York, reading, in part: "…[Camp in the field, Dec. 1, 1864]…Bill is getting ready to go out on picket…for three days and nights. He says it is a dam shame for he has not got any hard tack…we have got our winter quarters built. Our shanty is 16 feet long, 6 wide [&] 5 high with our canvas [tents] for a roof. There is six of [us] in a family. We have some gay old times especially when we get a canteen full of old tin-top-eye…you need not worry about my saying anything about our liberty at Syracuse for I would not have it out for the whole of the state of Virginia…I have got to go to work on the colonel's shanties…[Arlington Heights, May 15, 65]…we have been on a long and hard march. We arrived here some two or three days ago…tired out…I am in hopes that the marching is about done with…I am in hopes we will get out this month…you wished to know the boys that were killed in our Co. …one of them was killed on the battle field [Appomattox Campaign, Battle of Gravelly Run, Va., March 29, 1865] that was Peter Parker. He was killed while they were carrying him to the rear. He got wounded in the leg…he got hit in the head and hip. Three were…wounded. Only one of them died all the resent that come from old Jefferson Co. are all right except Dell…". Also included are the letter's original transmittal covers…PLUS; two are two war-date manuscript military style poems written by Lyman James Plummer while serving in the 94th New York, entitled: "The Battle-Cry of Freedom", and "The Prisoners Hope."…PLUS; six (6) war-date home front letters written by family and friends with some war-related news…PLUS; family provenance that these letters descended in the family to Plummer's great-great-granddaughter, 2007.
