A good group of three war-date Union soldier's letters, totaling six pages, 8vo., written by Pvt. John L. Hemenway [DOD July 24, 1865], Co. H, 17th Vermont Vols., concerning the fall of Petersburg and of the pursuit of Lee to Appomattox Court House, in part: "…[n. p. but Petersburg, March 20, 1865]…I have got to my company. I got here the 18 of March…I have got down here where the grey backs be I took the boat the 13 of March to New Haven and we landed to City Point the 17…and came on the cars to our regiment in front of Petersburg…I like this country tip top…[Camp before Petersburg, March 27, 1865 battle of Fort Stedman, Va.]…the 3 division in our Corps had a fight the 25 of this month and whipped the rebus and captured 3500 prisoners and captured 2 forts. The rebs were hungry and tried to break through our lines to get to our provision stores but could not…I see the prisoners when they marched by our camp. They looked pretty dirty and ragged. We have rebel deserters come in every day. They say that they are very short of food. The ware is about gone up. It wont last long. The boys are all well…send me some camphor gum…and make a little bag to put around my neck to keep the lice off of me…[n. p., but Burkesville, Va., April 9, 1865 breakthrough at Petersburg]…I'm camped now near Burkesville, Va. I was in the battle at Petersburg the 2 of April. I went into the battle Saturday night about 11 o'clock and fit till Monday morning…we whipped them and went into Petersburg at sunrise. I had my gun shot out of my hand and a ball hit my coat sleeve and tore it pretty bad. Harvey Nedon was killed in the battle. I never thought I should get killed…the balls flew like hail. I went into the fight as cool as a cucumber and had no fear of getting hit. I have been marching to Burkesville since the battle. Richmond is ours…I went into a rebs house an went into the batery and helped my self…". Also included are two war-date home front letters from Hemenway's cousin and one transmittal cover. Overall VG
