A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. oblong folio, written by Sergeant John D. Thompson, Co. A, 20th New York Cavalry, on captured Confederate commissary form, "He'd. Qrs. 20 N. Y. Cavalry in City Richmond, April 5, 1865 concerning the fall of Richmond and of Col. Evans being the first officer to raise the American flag over the Confederate Capitol, in part: "…the city of Richmond is ours. The 24th [&] 25th Army Corps captured the city. Our 5th Corps were the first to enter the city. Col. D. M. Evans planted the stars and stripes on the capitol on the 3rd inst. Then we paroled the city and then we went out on a scout about ten miles from the city. Cos. B. [&] A [were] the two companies captured prisoners 125. I took 11 [prisoners and] with 3 men captured a boat load of meal & bacon that were on their way to Lee['s] army. The city was stripped of everything that they could take with them. Millions of property fell into our hands…most of the citizens were overjoyed to see us…especially the colored class. Oh, it was a great day…excuse this paper and envelope as they are secesh…". Also included is a period 1865 copy of this letter used as evidence that Col. Evans was the man who raised the first American flag over the newly captured capitol. This letter's envelope reads, in full: "A letter written at the capture of Richmond. A proof of putting the flag on the Capitol. Sept. 20, 1865." Both VG
