A rare war-date signed CDV of Major Thomas L. Livermore, 5th New Hampshire who served at Gettysburg as the Chief of the Second Corps Ambulance Corps. A battle hardened veteran, Livermore knew what was required to save lives on a battlefield and he personally rode along the rear of Cemetery Ridge as the 2nd Corps deployed at dusk on July 1, 1863. He placed a dozen ambulances behind each of the Corps' divisions. He made sure that each ambulance was well supplied with water, bandages and stretchers. He then sent the rest into reserve alongside the ammunition and supply wagons located near the Taneytown Road. Finally, he dispatched stretcher bears to each of the brigades to make sure the wounded would be promptly cared for. All his preparatory actions paid off as the wounded were given quick attention, no doubt saving many a life. Following the battle, he went with the army in pursuit of Lee and commanded the Ambulance Corps until the end of summer, only giving up that assignment with regret. Livermore's Civil War service was an active one. He served with the 1st New Hampshire at the battle of First Bull Run. He was wounded during the battle of White Oak Swamp on June 30, 1862 and by the end of the war he was promoted colonel. Published by Silsbee, Case & Company, Boston. Near fine
