Large format cabinet card photograph, 6 ½" x 9 ¼", depicting a South American general in his richly brocaded uniform. The mount's verso carries the backmark of Racines & Cia, Bogota, Colombia and is inscribed "To my old friend Charley McLane. Enrique Morgan." The subject of this studio portrait was a classic 19th century soldier-adventurer. Born Henry Morgan in Virginia, he served throughout the Civil War with the Stonewall Brigade and emigrated to Colombia after Lee's surrender. Changing his Christian name to "Enrique," Morgan became an officer in the Colombian army and advanced through the ranks becoming a general of engineers. He ultimately fell to an assassin. This image, taken in the early 1880s, was sent to Morgan's friend Charles Henry McLane, formerly a Union cavalry sergeant serving the new state of West Virginia. A secondary back panel behind the image is inscribed by the elderly McLane in 1921 and presents the portrait to a certain John H. Morgan, no doubt a kinsman of the subject.
