Postcard showing a Confederate double-barrel cannon, ca. 1910, Athens, Georgia. Beneath this image of a gentleman posing before a cannon is the inscription: "Athens Ga. the only double barrel cannon in the world. Built in 1862." Indeed, a certain John Gilleland designed this unusual weapon which was cast in 1862 by the Athens Steam Company at a cost of $350. It was intended to fire two balls linked by a chain. During a test firing a cow was killed and Georgia's Governor Brown was not interested in the contraption. The cannon stands today in front of Athens's City Hall. Stains, else Good condition.
