An Early West Virginia State Flag, 5’ 4” x 3’, hand painted, with gold fringe. The field has a few very minor holes, the painted area retains good color, the blue border remains dark. The painted seal carries the motto “Montani Semper Liberi” (Mountaineers are Always Free). The center of the seal contains a boulder that has been inscribed June 20, 1863, the date West Virginia became a state. The two men on either side of the boulder represent agriculture and industry. On the left stands a farmer with an ax and plow before a cornstalk. On the other side stands a miner with a pickax. The banner with words “West Virgina” are cut on felt and appied. The eyelets are made of leather. ND, circa 1875-1900.
