Broadside Extra, "Rockland Gazette", Rockland, Maine, Tuesday Morning, September 9, 1856, 6 3/4" x 13 1/2", light age, else fine. Broadside showing the election returns for Governor of Maine, which Hannibal Hamlin won. The broadside provides the returns from 150 towns in Maine, and predicts Hamlin will win "by at least 15,000 over the opposition candidates". What's most interesting is that the Republicans nominated him for Governor of Maine, he carried the election by a large majority, and was inaugurated on January 8, 1857. In the latter part of February 1857, however, he resigned the governorship, and was again a member of the United States Senate from 1857 to January 1861. Another interesting fact is that Hamlin was a Democrat up until 1856, when he switched to the newly formed Republican party in 1857. Hamlin is better known as Abarham Lincoln's first Vice President, serving from 1861-1865. A rare mid 19th Century political broadside for a future Vice President.
