A good war-date Union home front letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Mary L. Robinson, Bristol, Ill., May 12, 63, in part: "…the captains are growing in number; for a young fellow that went from here (who was capt. [Silas Miller MWIA Kennesaw Mountain as colonel] in the 36th Illinois) was wounded and taken prisoner at Murphreesboro, has been exchanged and got home…he was at Richmond a long time. He said he had 1 lb. of beef and a pint of Indian meal per day…the capt…is at Sioux City among the Indians. We got news…that Vicksburg was burned and Richmond was ours. They rung the bells, hoisted flags, and got cannon ready for firing…when the 'Evening Journal' came it proved to be a complete hoax…Father went to a secret Union League [meeting] the other night…our town is for Lincoln and the Union every time though we have some copperheads, they keep pretty well still…". The original stamped transmittal cover is also included. VG
