Folded envelope, 6" x 3", signed "Jn. Rogers" and bearing orange Washington City cds with matching FREE hand stamp, addressed to Daniel D. Brodhead, Navy Agent, Boston, Massachusetts, the back flap noting the enclosure is "relative to req'n for 'Timber Docks'" and dated 14th July 1830. Rogers began his career aboard the U.S.S. Constellation in 1798, served against the Barbary pirates, was ranking officer during the War of 1812, Secretary of the Navy in 1823 and a Naval Commissioner thereafter. Very good condition.
