RICKOVER Hyman (1900 - 1986) was known as the "Father of the Nuclear Navy," a four-star admiral who directed the original development of naval nuclear propulsion and controlled its operations for three decades as director of Naval Reactors. On 16 November 1973 Rickover was promoted to four-star admiral after 51 years of commissioned service. He became the longest-serving naval officer in U.S. history with 63 years of active duty. Admiral Hyman Rickover, Typed Letter Signed "H. G. Rickover," one page on USS Jacksonville letterhead, with original mailing envelope, "At Sea / North Atlantic," to Congressman Andrew Ireland (Rep. Florida), Washington, D. C., in part: "We are returning from the first sea trials of the USS JACKSONVILLE…our 78th nuclear powered attack submarine…The JACKSONVILLE is capable of attaining speeds higher than any achieved by earlier classes…In addition to 78 attack type submarines, we also have 38 Polaris and Poseidon ballistic missile firing submarines, making a total of 116 nuclear submarines in operation." Hyman, a four-star admiral, served a whopping 63 years of active duty in the U. S. Navy! This lot includes a First Day postal cover commemorating the 1981 launching of the U.S.S. Corpus Christi. Very fine.
