Father of the American Navy, and probably the first to fly the new American flag while aboard the ship Ranger in 1777. Lot of three items. Two complete, original, newspapers: The COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, October 10, 1792, has the front page report, "FUNERAL of Admiral PAUL JONES," which announces his death the previous evening (July 18) in Paris and gives details of the funeral and the discourse delivered. THE DAILY PICAYUNE, New Orleans, April 15, 1905, has the front page story which describes the long search and ultimate discovery of John Paul Jones' body and its return to the United States, where he was buried with honors in the chapel at the U.S. Naval Academy. Front page heads include "BODY OF PAUL JONES FOUND. Remains of the Revolutionary Hero Located at Last. Ambassador Porter's Long Search in Paris Proves Successful. The Body Identified by the Highest French Medical Experts. Buried in a Leaden Coffin and Immersed in Alcohol. It Was Found in a Remarkable State of Preservation. Found in the Old St. Louis Cemetery After Much Trouble. Remains Will Be Held in Paris Awaiting the Action of the American Government." and from Washington, "Honors For the Hero." In addition, included is a 1929 Forbes lithograph of Jones from a painting after an etching by Moreau made form life in 1780. Three items-a wonderful Jones collection.
