American flag, 8’x19’, 35 stars, with large medal loops for eyelets, this fine flag, circa 1863-65 was created in 1863 with the admittance of West Virginia. the 36 star flag was introduced in July 1865 with the admittance of Nevada.
Flag has stamped “18” and three indecipherable letters” along the hoist. Made of thin muslin fabric, with expected wear, else VG. Possibly Naval. Flags of this size and date are rare..
