Three authentic issues of The Tree of Liberty, Pittsburgh, December 2, 1803, December 10, 1803 and December 17, 1803. Each issue is 4pp, disbound, VG.newspapers An extremely early newspaper printing of Jefferson's official description of the Louisiana Territory, printed over a series of three consecutive editions. “The following important tract was communicated by the President to the Congress of the United States. An Account of LOUISIANA, Being an abstract of Documents in the Offices of the Departments of State and of the Treasury.” From the 2nd issue, the entire front page and half the back page are taken with detailed description of the territory. The 10th issue also covers the entire front page and half the back page. The 17h issue concludes the account by taken the entire front page. All VG. A rare issue of one of the most important documents of the post-Louisiana Purchase period. The account is based on material assembled by Thomas Jefferson. It was the first real account of the vast new western territory to become available to the American people, and as such, the magnitude of its importance is obvious. It gives details of geography, inhabitants, Indians, laws, agriculture, and navigation.
