Large original photochrome of "UTE CHIEF SEVARA AND FAMILY," by the Detroit Photographic Company 1900 from a negative attributed to Denver photographer Charles Nast c1885. Published by the celebrated Western photographer WILLIAM HENRY JACKSON, a principal in the Detroit Photographic Company. Image features the Southern Ute chief Severo (Severa) wearing an infantry officer's frock coat and a US Army slouch hat, with his sons and other members of this family in traditional attire. Civil War veteran WILLIAM HENRY JACKSON moved to the NebraskaTerritory in 1866 and opened a photographic studio in Omaha. In 1869, Jackson began photographing the construction along the new Union Pacific Railroad. His work came to the attention of Ferdinand Hayden who was organizing a geologic survey to explore the Yellowstone region, and he was asked to accompany the expedition. For the next several years Jackson accompanied other geologic surveys of the west and southwest. In 1879 he opened a new studio in Denver and took hundreds of images of western scenes. The DETROIT PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPANY held the US rights to the "Photochrom" process, a proprietary photolithographic printing process developed in Switzerland that produced continuous-tone, full-color renditions from black and white negatives. William A. Livingstone gained ownership and rights to the Photochrome process in America in 1897. Livingstone invited Jackson to join his Detroitcompany as a partner. Jackson accepted the offer, bringing with him to Detroit an estimated 10,000 negatives of his work and that of other Western photographers which would provide the core of the company's photographic archive. CHIEF SEVERO was one of the principal chiefs of the Southern Utes. In 1880 he accompanied Chief Ouray to Washington. Pristine, near-mint condition.
