Archive of one ALS and three TLsS all signed, Charles E. Hughs,"with related ephemera retained by George Bickford Brigham, a roommate of Hughes while studying at Brown. Light folds and toning, mounting remnants, else fine condition.. The archive includes material dating between 1906 and 1943 and features a good content Autograph Letter Signed "Charles E. Hughes," two pages, 5.75"x 8.75", on separate conjoined sheets of Supreme Court letterhead, Washington, November 24, 1943 to Brigham's daughter on the occasion of her father's recent demise: "In a conversation with Morgan Brooks last Sunday I learned for the first time of the passing of your father, – my classmate at Brown –While I did not have the privilege of seeing your father in recent years, I have cherished the memory of our association in college days and I wish to send you this word of deep sympathy in the loss you have sustained. I remember well how friendly your father was and his keen interest in all our class and fraternity affairs. I understand that he was in retirement for a long period before passing and I trust that this last years were full of happiness…" The archive also includes three Typed Letters Signed, one page each with integral blank leaf, thanking Brigham for Christmas greetings and in one case thanking Brigham for his "congratulatory message" upon his election as Governor of New York, with original envelopes. Included is an engraved invitation and admission cards to his gubernatorial inauguration.
