The first Presidential memorial library, completed at the Lawnfield estate in Ohio by the widow of James Garfield four years after his assassination, houses almost 3,000 books that were used and treasured by the 20th president. Books were a scarce commodity to young James, who lost his father before the age of two, and was raised by his mother who struggled to maintain a humble existence. Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned, and one of these books is described below. Book, “Castilian Days,” by John Hays. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1871. First Edition, first issue with error on page 411 repeating text from page 408. 12mo, 414 pps. Lightly inscribed and signed on first blank flyleaf, “James A. Garfield / from / Horace Greeley / Cincinnati Ohio / April 29 / 1871”. James A. Garfield library bookplate measuring 2.75” X 1.5” is affixed to inside the front cover. Mottled burgundy boards, sunned spine, edge wear, spine cocked. Foxing to interior; binding secure. Good condition. Horace Greeley inscription and signature is light. Book is encased in a custom brown cloth case, 5.75” x 8”, with titles stamped in gilt on a black leather label on the upper spine and “James Garfield’s / Signed Copy / 1871” stamped in gilt on the lower spine. Very fine condition. Included with the book is free-franked envelope, 4.75” X 2.75”, addressed in manuscript to “Professor Alfred Dubois, Triumfo, Lower Calif”; franked in the upper right, “J. A. Garfield.” Signature is light but completely legible. Soiled, else fine condition.
