REAGAN, Ronald (1911-2004) Fortieth President of the United States who served for two terms (1981-1989) and contributed to the fall of European Communism. Typed Letter Signed, one page on White House letterhead, February 4, 1981, to Representative Andrew P. Ireland, (Rep.) Florida, Washington, D. C., in part: "…Our fundamental economic problem, however, is not the debt ceiling. That is merely a symptom. Its upward spiral reflects the continuing effects of excessive Federal spending. The undesirable effects will not disappear overnight. Nevertheless, the key now is to focus on changing our basic economic policies…" As originally attached, is a copy of a letter from Secretary of the Treasury Donald Regan to Dan Rostenkowski, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. Fine condition.As President, Reagan faced a budget stand-off in 1981, and signed an increase in the debt ceiling to $985.0 billion on February 7.
