An ornate certificate for $5000 with verso endorsements, 8 3/8" x 4", payable at the parent office in St. Louis, December 19, 1854, "Page, Bacon & Co. California" printed in left margin. The future Union general William T. Sherman was engaged in San Francisco finance during the winter of 1854-55 and recalls the decline of Page, Bacon & Co. in his memoirs. The St. Louis office collapsed after bankrolling construction of the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad, leaving the house subject to a ruinous run on its assets. Creases, very good condition.
