HARPUR, Robert (1731-1825). A Scotch-Irish immigrant and American Patriot, Harpur secured a professorship at King's College in New York City. The institution was re-named Columbia College after the American Revolution and would evolve into today's Columbia University. Autograph Letter Signed "Rob. Harpur", one page, octavo, May 15, 1765, King's College, to a Mr. Kemp. Penned in an excellent hand, the letter reads: "This day the Council were pleased to advise a grant in my favor, and now having but little time to prepare for a trip to the Country, wch must be immediately after commencement; I must request the favour of your perfecting such instruments as are necessary on your part, in as short a time as possible; for which I shall be much oblig'd to you. Mr. Banyar has promised to favour me with all the expedition in his power." archival tape repairs along folds and affixed to an early 20th century matt. VG condition.
