1777, Manuscript Pay Document for the Second Massachusetts, Very Good. 7.5" x 9," ragged at top edge, with paper loss at top of three columns. The first column is headed, "1777 Men Inlisted for 3 years or during the war"; Hugh Maxwell's name is listed with "for Gil.t Henry" after it, perhaps indicating that Maxwell accepted Henry's pay. The second column has £14: 0 : 0 after each name. The third and fourth columns seem to be "for three years" and "during the war." At right is a column of 18 names, headed by Col. Bailey. Seven other names are listed on the back, including Hugh Maxwell. Tape remnants on the back at lower corners. A rare, interesting Revolutionary War document. Hugh Maxwell was a Massachusetts Minute-Man who joined Prescott's Company after hearing about the Battle of Lexington. At Bunker Hill, he was injured when a musket ball passed through his right shoulder. Later, he was present at the siege of Boston and the battles of Trenton, Princeton, Saratoga, and Monmouth. His company entered Valley Forge in December 1777 and left in June 1778. While not a major figure in the Revolutionary War, Maxwell certainly saw his share of action and we have the pleasure of offering several items that refer to him.
