MOLSON, John (1763-1836) In 1786, John Molson founded what is today Canada's most successful brewery and several years later built the first entirely Canadian-made steamboat. He went on to build a fleet of 22 steamboats, one of which was the first to be used in the conduct of war. Partly-Printed Document Signed, 1-1/2p. folio, May 1, 1779, Quebec, and reads in part: “...I John Grant of the parish of Quebec hath put myself, and by these Presents doth voluntarily, and of my own free Will and Accord, put my self Apprentice to Henry Bolton millwright to learn his Art, Trade and Mystery, and after the Manner of an Apprentice to serve 4 years... Signed by Grant and Bolton at bottom. Endorsed on verso by Bolton, who states that Grant had fulfilled his obligation and was discharged from duty. It is also signed as witness by “John Molson”. Repaired, else about VG.
