Inspection Return of the Second Regiment Penns[ylvani]a, Commanded by Colonel Walter Stewart, September 1st, 1780.16.25" x 13.25", Fine. Listed are the totals of the men present and absent, and the number of arms on hand. Under the heading of men absent is an accounting of the men who are on extra duty; among these, one is with General (Arthur) St. Clair, another is with General (Anthony) Wayne, one is baking at headquarters, and another is an orderly in a Philadelphia hospital. Also listed are two sergeants deserted, one killed, one fife major deserted, one sergeant confined, three privates promoted to sergeants, one lieutenant who died in Philadelphia, and one killed at the blockhouse. Signed on the verso, "Remarks, the Regiment is in good Order, Jos. Harmar, Lt Col Com 7 Pa & Inspector Penns Division." The document has some general soiling and paper loss at corners, affecting nothing. Boldly written and suitable for framing and display. Harmar was second in command to General Anthony Wayne in the Yorktown campaign. After the Revolution, Harmar was given the titles "Lt Colonel commandant of the United States Infantry Regiment" and "Commander of the Army." He was sent to the Ohio territory in the late 1780s to fight the Indians. Colonel Walter Stewart was later promoted to Brevet Brigadier General. An able commander, he was noted for his political intrigues. Although serving in the field under George Washington, Stewart kept close relations with General Horatio Gates and was at least tangentially involved in the Conway Cabal in 1778. He also helped quell the mutinies of the Connecticut and Pennsylvania regiments in 1780 and 1781. In 1781, under the command of Anthony Wayne, he fought at the battle of Green Spring in July and at the siege of Yorktown in October.
