Map by Benjamin Stevens, tract in Lincoln County, Virginia (Kentucky), 30" x 30 1/2", May 3, 1784. A large hand-drawn vellum map showing 20,000 acres of land near "Herodsburgh", Kentucky, which is here described as "...a considerable TOWN of about Sixty Houses...twenty-two miles from Louis -Ville situated on the falls of the River Ohio...". Oddly enough, Harrodsburg is near Lexington rather than Louisville. The map-maker also describes the area as "fertile and settled" at a time when it was quite wild and prone to the ravages of Indian war parties. As this rare map was made for "proprietors" in New York, an inviting presentation was probably encouraged by those who commissioned the survey. Lightly hand-tinted. Some stains, else VF.
