Archive of over 100 manuscript receipts, mostly octavo, pertaining to the financial activities of Declaration of Independence Signer Lewis Morris (1726-1798) and his sons, Lewis Morris IV (1754-1824) and James Morris (1766-1814). Despite enjoying great personal wealth under the British Crown, Lewis Morris of New York risked all and became an ardent supporter of the Patriot cause during the American Revolution. Holding a Brigadier General's commission in the New York Militia, Morris also served in the Continental Congress. His activities on behalf of the fledgling United States caused British retaliation against his personal property and Morris lost nearly everything during the course of the war. The papers in this group span the years 1773 through the early 1800's with the bulk of the archive dating to the 1790's. Documents clearly relating to Morris the Signer are invariably addressed to "General Morris". Included are receipts for all manner of goods and services from horse tack to writing paper. Additionally, most of the documents are signed by the issuing creditor and as such are worthy of further research. Aging, stains and minor splits as expected. Overall Good condition.
