WEST, Benjamin (1746-1817). Not to be confused with the great American painter of the same era, this Benjamin West was a New Hampshire politician of some stature. His career led him to serve in the Continental Congress, the constitutional; Convention, and as a Representative to the First United States Congress. Autograph Note Signed "B West", one page, octavo, November 26, 1799 to "The Hon l S Stevens Esq". Identified as a "memorandum" on t he verso, this note reads in part: "That the privileges given by law to a tavern keeper so far as they respect the sale of liquors shall be confined to the distilling house of such tavern keeper, and shall not extend his store or buildings, nor adjoining --- his dwelling house...". Some stains, else VG condition.
