A good early Massachusetts author G. W. F. Mellen's (1804-1875) prospectus for his abolitionist booklet entitled: Slavery. Its Unconstitutionality. Today this very book is still being sold on the web. The lot here includes a printed, 1p. 4to., salesman's letter, Boston, Dec. 28, 1841, signed in type "G. W. F. Mellen, reading, in part: "Having lately published a work entitled 'Slavery; its Unconstitutionality,' the argument embracing extracts from the proceedings of the National and State Conventions on this subject; together with extracts from the decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States respecting the extent of their jurisdiction and of the rights of individuals under the Constitution; and thinking at this present time every one may be desirous of knowing how far the power of the Courts and of Congress and of the State extend when the rights of individuals, whether white or black are concerned…". With manuscript post script noting the price is $1.25. With attached postal leaf addressed to a member of the United States House of Representative. Near fine.
