Partial letter by anonymous author, 4pp, quarto, Washington, D. C., March 29, 1848 to unknown recipient, reading in part, "…The South had no more territory out of which they could make slave states - they therefore determined to annex Texas for the purpose of extending slavery. They found they could not pass the annexation act without leaving the western boundary open. They left it open and then for the purpose of enlarging the territory as much as possible, so as to make more slave states….the marching of troops from Corpus Christi to the Rio Grande was only part and parcel of their grand Scheme to enlarge and increase the Slave power of the Government…distinguished men of both parties, all declared that the annexation of Texas would inevitable involve this country with a war with Mexico…" An insider's look at the wrenching issues facing a fragmenting nation during the late antebellum era. Very good condition.
