Original Newspaper, Frank Leslie’s Illustrated, June 7, 1862, 16pp., 11” x 16,” complete, filled with war news and wood-cut engravings. Important front page report continuing on page two, provides a full printing of BOTH General Hunter’s and President Lincoln’s Proclamation revoking Hunter’s order. Hunter’s in part, “Hilton Head, S.C., May 9, 1862, General Orders No. 11. - ... Slavery and martial law in a free country are altogether incompatible; the persons in these three States--Georgia , Florida, and South Carolina - heretofore held as slaves, are therefore declared forever free.” Then, Lincoln’s proclamation in part, “A Proclamation. Whereas there appears in the public prints, what purports to be a proclamation, of Major General Hunter ... that the supposed proclamation, now in question, whether genuine of false, is altogether void ...” From the front cover, two illustrations regarding Hunter’s Contraband Brigade, with associated report [In May, 1862, General David Hunter began enlisting black soldiers in the occupied districts of South Carolina. He was ordered to disband the 1st South Carolina (African Descent) but eventually got approval from Congress for his action]. And, on the front page, a 1/2 page illustration “Carrying the War into Africa - ... the South Carolina Contraband Brigade Leaves Beaufort for Hilton Head ...” Additionally, from the interior, an illustration of Robert Small’s gunboat “Planter” with a short report.
