Complete issue of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated, June 4, 1864, 16pp., disbound, VG. From the front cover, a very dramatic engraving captioned, “An Incident in the Battle of the Wilderness - The Rebel Generals Bradley Johnson and E. Stuart Taken tot he Rear by Negro Cavalry, May 12.” The engraving depicts two white, unarmed Confederate Officers, one of whom is staring directly at his guard, a black armed soldier. Although dramatic, the caption has inaccuracies. Both Major General Edward Johnson and Brig. General George H. Steuart were captured at Bloody Angle May 12 during the Battle of Spotsylvania, not the Wilderness. There are several battle scenes engraved in the interior.
