Battey" 1st Lt. 40th Infantry, 1p. oblong folio, February 5, 1867, Walterboro, South Carolina, being his pay voucher for the months of December and January, in which Battey seeks reimbursement for expenses for his negro servant "Frank Sprewell" who is listed as having dark eyes and complexion with black hair. With Autograph Letter Signed by Battey to Paymaster Nicholls transmitting the voucher. About VG. Frederick A. Battey (?-1932) Commissioned captain in the 57th Illinois, December 1861, WIA at Shiloh, POW in October 1864, rose to rank of colonel during the Civil War, then served in the regular army until 1870.
