Congressional imprint “Letter of the Secretary of War, Communicating, In compliance with a resolution of the Senate, of December 14, 1868, reports in relation to recent disturbances in Louisiana.” 45pp. octavo, January 1869, providing a full testimony by multiple witnesses pertaining to the massacre and lynching of hundreds of freed slaves by white and Spanish mobs. With recapitulation of casualties in several incidents, listing the victim and the murderer, as well as a “Supplemental list of murders and outrages committed in the State of Louisiana during the month of November, 1868” listing the circumstances in five deaths and eleven outrages. Fine condition. This massacre occurred in St. Landry Parish Louisiana where local blacks were killed by Democrats. The massacre started when three local whites beat up an 18-year old man named Emerson Bently, a white editor of the local Republican newspaper and a teacher with the Freedmen's Bureau. Local blacks came to his rescue, were arrested, taken to jail and hung that night. I the next few days, armed whites went on a "Negro hunt", killing an estimated 200 blacks.
