The 1860s image depicts an unknown civilian sitter, its mat imprinted with a W. H. Furbush, Delaware, Ohio backmark. Furbush, born a slave in Kentucky, was once owned by the famed artist John James Audubon. As a freedman by 1860, Furbush was an established photographer and traveled with the Union Army before enlisting towards war's end. He would later serve as a sheriff in Arkansas and migrate west to Colorado. Some stains to mat, else fine condition.
