Letter by C. Rodney Layton, 3pp, octavo, Nashville, Tennessee, February 13, 1871, to a William McCalley, n.p., reading, in part: "…We are not troubled with the Ku Klux - by that name in this neighborhood. Nor do they usually operate very extensively in the vicinity of military posts. There are plenty of outlaws in the state formerly guerillas & these Ku Klux but now only illicit whiskey distillers. It is said that these distilleries (are) running in violation of the internal Revenue Laws can be found in any stream along the base of the Cumberland Mountains. We are called upon frequently to send out parties to aid the Revenue officers in seizing distilleries and making arrests. Unaided they can do nothing as these fellows can & will successfully resist them…fifty men were sent down the next day. Nearly all the prisoners re-captured." The turmoil of Reconstruction is vividly documented here. Damp stains along the upper edge, else very good condition.
