This scarce porcelain segregation sign is double sided with words “COLORED REST ROOM” on each side, 12” x 8,” lustrous white background, royal blue lettering, and grommet reinforced holes at the top. The sign is produced on heavy gauge steel, and shows only traces of rust at the hanging holes and again at the corner edges. The sign was manufactured to hang perpendicular to the wall thus readable from both sides. Very Fine, circa 1950. The porcelain process does not use inks but rather finely ground colored glass crystals which are baked at high temperature to fuse with the steel. Each color is applied separately. On this sign, one can feel that the lettering is actually raised (the second fused layer).
