Authentic issue of The Connecticut Courant, Hartford, August 22, 1836, 4pp., disbound. From the interior, a 3/4 column report of a fugitive slave case in Burlington New Jersey. A fugitive for 17 years, Severn Martin was taken into custody by the Federal marshall, brought before a judge and redetitioned into the hands of the claimant, Col. Christian of Virginia. However “.. a crowd of at least 500 persons both white and colored assembled on the wharf ... declared he should not be taken away. ...” The mayor then warned “..the penalty for attempting to rescue a slave is $1000...” the crowd dispersed.
