Rarely seen, complete bound volume of The National Intelligencer, Washington DC, issued three days per week, January 1, 1850 through December 31, 1850, 158 issues, each issue is 4pp. Boards are loose, some issues loose from spine, still the newspapers are VG. This is a complete day-to-day report of the congressional debates which ultimately resulted in the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. The passage itself is reported in the September 21, 1850 issue covering 2 columns and providing the complete text of the law. But the debate really opened with Henry Clay’s January 29th speech which is reported in the January 31st issue taking the complete second page. For eight months members of Congress, led by Clay, Daniel Webster, and John C. Calhoun, senator from South Carolina, debated the compromise. Every important speech is recorded in this newspaper run. In fact, nearly each issue reports the debate. Although the Fugitive Slave Law and the other 1850 compromises dominate this newspaper run, there are other fascinating topics covered including Slavery in the District, African Slave Trade, .President Fillmore’s letter regarding the slave trade between states, talk of secession .... so much. And, of course, most of the issues contain runaway slave ads.
