Hardcover book, facsimile of “Account Book of Francis Jackson, Treasurer The Vigilance Committee of Boston,” 1924, Bostonian Society, 82pp., VG. The book reproduces the treasurer’s ledger of the Boston Vigilance Committee, beginning October 21, 1850 “to assist fugitive slaves.” The entries contain dozens of references to transporting fugitive slaves to Canada. As example, on pg 18, April 20 through June 11, 1851, there are seven line item expenses such as “Samuel May for passage to Canada of Priscella Hatton, $10.” ... “Lewis E. Caswell for sending a wounded Fugitive John Hotton to Canada, $15.” Also, on the same page are several references to the Thomas Sims case, “John M. Spear - Horse and chaise case Thom Sims, $10” ... “Printing 500 Billets - ‘Prayer for Thom. Sims’, $3.” And, of significant notice is the entry of April 24, “Benj. F. Roberts - Printing 1000 Placards & Posting ‘Caution to Colored People’”. And that’s just one page ! On pg 26, another extraordinary line item, “Henry Kemp for assisting rescueing Slave in July Boston harbor.” The noted fugitive Anthony Burns arrived in Boston on July 1853.
