Good Confederate soldier's war-date letter written by Mississippi Minuteman Private R. M. Morehead, 2pp., 4to, with verso address panel having two CSA #4 5¢ stamps and the Vicksburg CDS, "Camp Milldale Near Vicksburg, Aug 22th 1862," to Mrs. A. F. Morehead, Concord, Mississippi, reading, in part: "…we were alarmed while on drill and ordered out about half of a mile to meet the Yankees who had come up Yazoo River and with 3 gunboats and two transport boats with 5 thousand troops as was thought they came up to Haynes Bluff about one mile from where we were encamped at Camp Bruce…We stayed out on line of battle until about midnight when we were ordered back to camp, as soon as we go back to camp we were ordered to this place…It is thought that the Yanks is going to attack Vicksburg in a few days and we will be ordered to that place which is I suppose 10 or 12 miles from here. I have not seen a Yankee since I arrive at this place but I have heard their cannon roar and a bomb whistle through the air, they throwed a shot or two…". The Mississippi Minute Men were called out by the state in May 1862 for six months service. They were not mustered into Confederate service, but were subject to the orders of Confederate officers. They spent their time guarding Vicksburg from attack during all of 1862 and were known to be stationed at Camp Milldale, Mississippi. This is the very first letter we have ever had the pleasure of offering from a Mississippi Minute Man making it arguably one of the rarest Confederate letters we have ever sold. This fact combined with the letter retaining its original postally used transmittal leaf should make this a must have for the serious Confederate collector. Creases, light soiling, two small holes from breaking seal. Overall very good condition.
