A great war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Ambrose M. Hite, Co. E, 97th Virginia Militia during their transition into the 33rd Virginia (Stonewall Brigade), "Camp near New Market, Shenandoah Valley, Co., Va., April 5, 1862", in part: "We are now camped back of New Market on the hill in Boushong's [?] woods…we left camp…on the first of April…we are camped in tents…some of the men are deserting already. Gen. Jackson is going to send thirty cavalrymen and Capt. [John] Flinn's command after all the men in Page [County] tomorrow. They are to come dead or alive and I am glad of that…I hope they will punish them…Benjamin F. Shenk is our captain…Capt. [John D.] Aleshire's company, Capt. Shenk's…companies were all put together in one company which composes one hundred men…Gen. Jackson's army is at Rude's hill. Col. Ashby is below Mount Jackson…the main army of the Yankys are at Strasburg. Their picket reaches up as far as Edenburg…Jackson will give them another fight before long. Ashby is fighting them a little every day. Jackson's men has not been in any battle since that Sunday which they fought this side of Winchester. The militia of Rockinham is turing out very bad, but they have sent two pieces of artillery and some cavalry men after them…Col. Bushwell, Agt. Grasom and Maj. Finter will be throw out of office and will have to go in ranks…I do not know who will be our colonel. The officers say that the draft will come into effect before long. Lieut. Modesitt is making out the payrolls for January…the officers will not receive substitutes under 18…so Daniel Beaver and John Kootz will have to come in there own places and some other boys was turned of[f] too…direct your letters to New Market…".
