A great Confederate soldier's war-date battle letter, 2pp. folio, written by Pvt. Ambrose M. Hite, Co. H (Page Grays), 33rd Virginia Infantry [POW Spotsylvania May 12, 1864], "near Gordonsville, Orange Co., Va., June 22, 1862", in part: "…I am well at present except a little fatigued from marching…those battles that occurred the 8th and 9th of June the one that occurred own Sunday taken place down the left of Harrisonburg. None of our brigade was…in the fight…I never heard such cannonading as they was that Sunday. Ewell's men done the fighting on Sunday. Our brigade had to match Shield's to keep them from crossing the river. Own Sunday morning we was laying still and was not thinking about the Yankys (that was the 8 of June) [at the battle of Cross Keys] when we heard the cannon fringe a cross the river. Fremont (a Yanky general) sent General Ewell (a southern general) word that he had us all surrounded and said we should surrender. Gen. Ewell sent him word back that he would square up the books with the end of the bayonet before 12 o'clock and he did…Old [Stonewall] Jack knows how to work them. On Monday following…Gen. Jackson ship Gen. Shield very bad taken 6 pieces of cannon and about 500 Yankys prisoners all of our brigade was in the fight on Monday [at the battle of Port Republic]…we cross the ridge at Staunton…I suppose you all had a enough of the Yankys…Col. Buswell…said they camp all along Mill Creek…I heard they taken all the horses along Mill Creek…they burnt up there commissary stores and lots of guns…I expect hands will be scarce and will be hard to get the harvest off…if the Yankys have not run over the grain…we have been whipping the Yankys every time…the Yankys thought they had Jackson surrounded several times but he always finds his way out…".
