A good Confederate soldier's war-date letter, 2pp. folio, written by Pvt. Ambrose M. Hite, Co. H (Page Grays), 33rd Virginia Infantry [POW Spotsylvania May 12, 1864], "Camp Winder, Caroline Co., Va., Jan. 3, 1863", in part: "…we got to camp the 21st of Dec…the boys were all glad to see us roll in. They put all the boys that we taken down in the guard house; and there they will have to stay till there trial comes off. We have 17 of our boys in the guard house now and 40 more deserters at home . Gen. Jackson is under arrest for talking sassy to a private. The orders are good deal stricter now…Ambrose C. Huffman [WIA Second Bull Run & POW Strasburg, Va., Sept. 17, 64] and Alfred Kite…and a good many others from this brigade are gone to the valley to hunt up the boys that belong to this brigade. They are going to Harrisonburg Co., Hardy Co., Shenandoah Co., and Page Co. They will have a long trip…they started on New Years morning…I do not think that we will have any more fights this winter. The Yankys are all on the other side of the river. We are stationed 20 miles southeast of Fredericksburg…we have gain[ed] a great victory in Tennessee. They captured 4,000 prisoners and 31 pieces of artillery and two Brigadier Gen…".
