Book, A JOURNAL OF THE LIFE, GOSPEL LABOURS, AND CHRISTIAN EXPERIENCES OF THAT FAITHFUL MINISTER OF JESUS CHRIST, JOHN WOOLMAN, 464 pages, octavo, 1794, printed by R.M. Jackson, Dublin, Ireland. New Jersey Quaker John Woolman (1720-1772) was a prolific writer who championed society's poor and downtrodden. This posthumous collection of his work addresses labor, the duties of the rich, and, of course, slavery. A two-part essay titled "Considerations on the Keeping of Negroes" encompasses some 74 pages in this book and delivers a remarkably progressive view of race relations at a time when slavery flourished in all of the colonies. Woolman's concluding remarks sum up his philosophy on the subject: "...Negroes are our fellow-creatures, and their present condition amongst us requires our serious consideration. We know not the time when those scales, in which mountains are weighed, may turn...". Tight leather binding with some wear. Minimal interior staining, else sound and Fine condition.
