A war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Edwin R. Wyeth, Co. F, 14th Indiana Vols., "Harrison's Landing, Va., Aug. 3, 1862", in part: "…we are now in the grand Army of the Potomac commanded by Little Mc himself. There is quite a large army here…looks like it could take Richmond at a single blow…we have all sorts of men…all dressed in uniform from the rough Irishmen down to the low bred bounty hopper of…our Eastern Cities…the hoopers try to put on airs over the working class of men…I have sen the wonder of the world (the Monitor). She is a healthy looking craft…she looks jest like a board with a tub on it and sent afloat. I also seen the Union gun at Fortress Monroe. I seen the wrecks of the Congress and Cumberland. The mast of the Cumberland can be seen off New Port News. The Congress was burnt to the water. She lays (or the hull of her) on a bar close to Sewell's Point. I now would like to see the Merrimac but she is blown up…". VG
